First Responders Warmline

The First Responders Warmline is available to provide mental health support to paramedics and other first responders, so that they can continue to help and support others.

Staffed by first responders trained in the delivery of peer support, the warmline is available:

Seven Days A Week
11:30 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. Labrador time
12:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. Island time

Provincial Mental Health Groups

Provincial Mental Health groups are offered around a wide variety of mental health and addictions issues. These groups are one way to increase accessibility to services across our province. Provincial Mental Health groups are offered virtually and are facilitated by local mental health clinicians. Group topics vary and are expanding in their diversity.

Centre for Pain and Disability Management

The Centre for Pain and Disability Management is a provincial program for people 18 years or older experiencing long-term or persistent pain, who do not require further medical investigations or treatments, and who would benefit from a team approach to rehabilitation. You can self-refer to this program or a professional referral from your health care provider is also accepted.

Richard’s Legacy Foundation

A Foundation for survivors of suicide loss – Please reach out if you have been affected by the death of a loved one by suicide and need support.

Richard’s Legacy Foundation for Survivors of Suicide Loss Support Group Meetings:
o The support group meets twice monthly:
o The 2nd and 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 pm.
o Meeting location is 878 Topsail Road, St. John’s, NL (in the Lifewise offices).
o Counselling available one on one for individuals, and families.

Friendly Calls Program

The Friendly Calls program is a free phone program that is available to any adult 18 years and older who maybe experiencing loneliness and isolation. The program pairs a trained Red Cross volunteer with an adult (18+) who may have limited social and family connections or feels they could benefit from more social interaction over the phone. There is no cost to participate and if the person decides it’s not a good fit for them, they can cancel at any time.

Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) / Employee Family Assistance Program (EFAP)

If you are working in the public or private sector, your employer, or union may offer an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or Employee and Family Assistance (EFAP). This program provides professional and confidential assistance to resolve personal issues that impact your well-being and work performance. Services differ based on who you are employed with, but generally include assessment and brief counselling or a referral to a professional counselling services with an approved provider. Please contact your Human Resources department or a designated EAP/EFAP Coordinator to discuss if services are available for you.

Keep me SAFE program – International Students

International students can access professional counselling in real-time and/or appointment-based  to help with any school, health, or general life concern at no cost to them.  The  keep.meSAFE Student Support Program is available night and day via phone, app, or web based.  The service is completely confidential within the limits of the law and available in 60+ different languages.  Download the MY SSP app, complete a profile, and start a live chat or call with a counsellor anytime anywhere.

 

Primary Health Care

In Newfoundland and Labrador, primary health care is typically a person’s first point of contact with the health care system. It includes a range of community-based services essential to maintaining and improving health and well-being throughout an individual’s entire lifespan.

If you have primary health care concerns, please contact your primary care provider (i.e. Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner). If you don’t have a primary care provider, please register with Patient Connect NL here .  If you do not have access to online registration, please call 1-833-913-4679. Video Relay Service (VRS) calls are welcome. The information provided on Patient Connect NL will be used to plan and improve access to primary health care in Newfoundland and Labrador, with the goal of connecting individuals to a primary care provider as soon as one becomes available in their chosen area. Opioid Dependence Treatment Hub – Eastern-Urban Zone

The Opioid Dependence Treatment (ODT) Hubs help with concerns related to opioid use or wanting help to reduce physical, mental and emotional withdrawal symptoms.

The Hubs offer rapid access to medication-assisted treatment (Suboxone and Methadone), as well as:

  • Withdrawal support
  • Counselling
  • Peer support
  • Links to resources
  • Take-home naloxone kits, and other safe use supplies.

In-person, telephone and telehealth service is available throughout the region. A referral isn’t required.

Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm local time

Note for providers: The hubs are also available to support community-based physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists and counsellors who have patients who use substances.

Psychiatry Emergency Services

Psychiatric emergency services are available in any emergency department.  The emergency department is staffed on a 24-hour basis.  A health professional, such as a Doctor or Nurse, assess all patients who present with mental health and addiction concerns.  The department also has access, when needed, to 24-hour, on-call coverage by a Psychiatrist or psychiatric staff.

Youth Outreach Program, Eastern Health

The service to children and youth, 12 -18 years old, aimed at reducing harm associated with substance use, as well as helping youth stay in school.  Youth Outreach Workers act as mentors and positive influencers, helping connect and navigate services, providing information and working with community partners who also service children and youth.
