Status of Women Councils – Western

Regionally-based councils funded by Women and Gender Equality to advance the status of women by helping them to navigate services such as housing, income support, employment programs, counselling, schools, and more. They also provide public education, programming and advocacy.

Bay St. George Status of Women Council – Stephenville: They offer an affordable temporary housing unit called Karen’s Place. Please call Stephenville office at (709) 643-4444. Visit their Facebook page.

Corner Brook Status of Women Council: They offer an affordable, supportive, temporary housing unit called Vesta Place for up to 4 women in a communal living setting. The housing coordinator works directly with the tenants to address issues contributing to homelessness and to connect with various community and government services. The St. John’s Status of Women Council and Women’s Centre

The St. John’s Women’s Centre is dedicated to providing FREE women-centered, community-based programs delivered within a safe, non-judgmental, trauma-informed, caring environment. Programs include: individual drop-in counselling, group counselling for people experiencing IPV (Intimate Partner Violence), clothing boutique, tea time, and other holistic and social groups.

They also provide a Managed Alcohol Programa pilot project harm reduction program delivered from a housing-first and trauma-informed approach. This program aims to decrease harms and barriers associated with chronic alcohol use delivered to those for whom other treatment options are not appropriate or available.

Provincial Transition House Crisis Line

Support is available to women experiencing domestic violence. If you would like help with safety planning, or just to talk, there are women’s centres in nine regions of the province. You can contact the one nearest you. If you are ready to leave a situation of domestic violence, there are Transition Houses all across the province who provide shelter to women and children fleeing violence. Support for individuals using opioids, family members, and health-care providers, including help for individuals navigating the system and connecting with support and services.

SPLASH Centre – Habour Grace Community Youth Network

A part of the Community Youth Network – a provincial network aimed to engage youth, primarily 12 – 18, and up until 30 years of age, through provision of appropriate programs and services that support wellness, primary needs, learning, skill development and civic engagement.The SPLASH Centre also creates a hub to help increase community capacity within the region with access to community partners and additional services.

Empower the Disability Resource Centre, Advocacy Services

The number of barriers to accessing services can sometimes be great, particularly for people with disabilities. With a focus on empowering the people to do their own advocacy, at Empower we help people build their own skills and determine their own approach to solve the problems they face. At Empower, we want to encourage independent living by helping people build their own skills and develop their own approach to the problems they may face.

Mobile Crisis Response Team – Labrador-Grenfell Region

Mobile crisis response teams are comprised of mental health and addictions clinicians and police officers who are trained to respond together to mental health and addictions-related calls for service. The purpose of these teams is to deliver crisis intervention services directly to people in the community, thereby helping divert individuals from emergency departments and the criminal justice system.
